While I have been busy, I honestly forgot to and often put it off. Lots of music recording and production has been coming in for me and not just my own projects. So I've been caught up in it. Speaking of which, here is my latest release from our little punk band the Born Shit Stirrers from the good people at Serial Bowl Records <a href="https://serialbowlrecords.bandcamp.com/album/scratch-n-sniff">https://serialbowlrecords.bandcamp.com/album/scratch-n-sniff</a><p></p><p style="text-align: center;">We've come a long way. From shitty closet recordings to the first vinyl I fully mixed. I think it's our most eclectic album yet. My old college roommate even pitched in with a tune he used to play at drunken parties. Hopefully everyone enjoys it, or isn't too offend at the very least. First 100 orders get a limited poster. Available on 12 inch vinyl, CD, or digital download.</p><p style="text-align: center;">In other news, in the off chance your in Japan and near me, I'll be playing my first solo gig after at least a decade. OK, back to work. I'll be back with more to say on various subjects again soon I hope...</p><p style="text-align: center;">Love, Lum<br /></p>

Well, here it is. 12 tracks of a genre I never thought I’d record.
Well kind of one genre. Really Americana I guess. But there is some genre bending with some heavy stuff, funk and even hip hop. Took me years to
appreciate country music and basically a lot of digging around in the
past dusting some stuff off. I think I came up with my own take on
it, although far from traditional. I really wanted an excuse to call
up old band mates as well as current and new ones, to make a kind of
time capsule of a bunch of people who I’ve enjoyed playing with
over the years. There are even some family contributions as well. If
you weren’t on this one I hope I can catch you again in the future.
This really was challenging and fun to make (even if I was getting
obsessive about it). I think I needed this. Big thanks to all of
the players on here. Couldn’t have done
it without you! Really! Sorry this blog has been quite this year. I do have tons of pedal stuff backed up to get to. I've just been in the studio a lot, which is a good thing. I'll try to get back to it soon. <br /></p>

It was a exciting pre-show purchase for me a 20 something circa winter 2003. Having grown up on a healthy dose of lush chorus from Nirvana to The Police, I was looking to recreate those tones. I'm sure my heart was set on a Electro Harmonix Small Clone or Poly Chorus, but the lowly Guitar Center at the time only had the Boss. It did the job, but as time went on (17 years now), as I read the bashing of it on various guitar forums, and as I played friends' Poly Choruses, I realized the damn thing didn't do all I wanted it to. I wanted the wacky quick modulation. </p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IQ1WEvhkHxQ/YYfwbTXad2I/AAAAAAAAOlQ/462JpN0AQ24PpKvUGfSQSedn7kIFcHDWACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG20211102224228.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="150" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IQ1WEvhkHxQ/YYfwbTXad2I/AAAAAAAAOlQ/462JpN0AQ24PpKvUGfSQSedn7kIFcHDWACLcBGAsYHQ/w200-h150/IMG20211102224228.jpg" width="200" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">First mod attempt </span><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p>I found some great mods online for altering the delay time from flanger to more extreme chorus by changing 47pf cap on the C10 cap to a lower or higher value, up to 100pf. Unfortunately, upon opening my chorus (bought in 2003) I realized it was made of all surface mount components, which are a bitch to try to mod (not recommended). Not only that, but upon close inspection, I realized the whole circuit is different with a very different chip powering the delay. They really should have just named my pedal a CH-2 or something. After a lot of searching and research, it turns out Boss' schematic refers to it as a CH-1T(Taiwan?). It really helps when trying to search for it. I guess Boss decided to go with the new layout sometime after 2001. That said, I'm not sure I really hear much differences in the old to new models. But the old analog mods will not work on this newer model. So after more searching I came across a great blog that had a newer digital mod. Here: <a href=" https://proto-schlock.blogspot.com/2013/04/boss-ch-1-mod-digital-version.html?m=1"> https://proto-schlock.blogspot.com/2013/04/boss-ch-1-mod-digital-version.html?m=1<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L17s6c50gQ8/YYs7YHyp1kI/AAAAAAAAOnw/Ry660CzsQjwJ-mzkixjSUz6hgjOQZmViACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_20211110_122313.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1447" data-original-width="2048" height="226" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L17s6c50gQ8/YYs7YHyp1kI/AAAAAAAAOnw/Ry660CzsQjwJ-mzkixjSUz6hgjOQZmViACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_20211110_122313.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><div><span style="font-size: x-small;">Here's the new schematic in case you can't find it</span>.</div></td></tr></tbody></table></a><p></p><p></p><p>This guy changed the value or the R63 resistor to around 1.8K. He also had some other interesting mods which I will get into later. I didn't want to be too invasive to my pedal, so I opted to add a 8.2K resistor in parallel to the original 15K to cut the total resistance value to around 5.3K. Worked great! Wacky quick modulation galore! However, I got greedy and tried poking around at the circuit to find what controlled the delay time on the chip. I had some luck with the R43 resistor, but dropped the pedal in doing so. The modded, very small resistor pictured above snapped off. Upon many failed attempts, I finally settled on bridging the connection for 0 resistance. I got even quicker modulation up to 99% of the rate control knob. However it folds in on itself at the very last 1% maxed position to cancel out the movement.</p><p>So, here's the disclaimer* DON'T TRY TO MOD THESE SUPER SMALL COMPONENTS UNLESS YOU'RE WILLING TO DESTROY YOUR PEDAL OR UNLESS YOU HAVE THE PROPER TOOLS AND SKILLS. Seriously this was a pain to mod. I think bridging the resistor ended up being easier in the end. Maybe next time just a small dab of solder over the resistor.<br /></p><p>Now another mod I see a lot of people attempt is adding vibrato to a chorus pedal. They are in fact the same circuits but with chorus, it adds the dry guitar signal. Where as vibrato is just the modulated signal only. So, if you have a stereo chorus (two outputs) like my CH-1, usually you can just add a jack plug connected to nothing into the output B or second output (usually) This will make the pedal send the second output dry signal to nothing. Muting it, turning your main output to the amp into vibrato. Hope this helps some people! If anyone figures out a safe why to mod the delay time to flanging and deeper chorus, let me know. Here's a quick video sample. (of the earlier mod plus vibrato)<br /></p>

With a little gentle sliding up and away from the "midi in" jack the top should come off with the board. By now you should see picture #2. Next we'll unscrew the washer holding the broken pot. The top board will come loose. Picture #3 at the bottom shows the 5 solder points we want to de-solder. Honestly this is the hardest part. Don't heat the points too long. Use solder braid to lift the old solder. You might need wire cutters or pliers if the old rotary encoder is stubborn to come out. After the old broken rotary encoder is out, pop in the new one and solder it in. (If the new rotary encoder has small metal tabs on the top sides like mine did in up top in picture#4, you may have to snip those off to fit it flush to the enclosure.) Then put everything back together. Hopefully you didn't loose the original knob like I did and yours looks totally original. My orange knob was all I had on hand at the time. I'll have to get something better in the future. Hopefully this helps you bypass Digitech customer support and shipping. Good luck out there. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pRGlzWV_wQE/YN6ZUb9ueII/AAAAAAAAMd8/uGlZNXHnK6M2KTFgjacHH1t01H7YCqKzwCPcBGAsYHg/s4000/IMG20210627213508.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="3000" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pRGlzWV_wQE/YN6ZUb9ueII/AAAAAAAAMd8/uGlZNXHnK6M2KTFgjacHH1t01H7YCqKzwCPcBGAsYHg/s320/IMG20210627213508.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">#3<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6gBNvi6eOqA/YN6ZUa29w3I/AAAAAAAAMd8/07eDu0DK4m8M-S_Do6NITFIGY0DGf7hGwCPcBGAsYHg/s4000/IMG20210627222454.jpg" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="3000" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6gBNvi6eOqA/YN6ZUa29w3I/AAAAAAAAMd8/07eDu0DK4m8M-S_Do6NITFIGY0DGf7hGwCPcBGAsYHg/s320/IMG20210627222454.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">What a looker...</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr></tbody></table></div><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><br /><br /><p><br /></p>Lumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08906332533953481681noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1930224298847481396.post-23648003621218810162021-06-01T09:43:00.010-07:002021-07-06T20:15:39.917-07:00Volume Pedal Mod Revisited (Switchable Minimum Volume/Volume Off)<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s5wqxTLZiuU/YLZeOb8lRvI/AAAAAAAAMGo/GbpP_dvxfR0hGm8hwngxGBZakV1HlhF7gCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG20210601123336.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s5wqxTLZiuU/YLZeOb8lRvI/AAAAAAAAMGo/GbpP_dvxfR0hGm8hwngxGBZakV1HlhF7gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG20210601123336.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;"> So with the prospects of once again being a supporting guitarist for Don Matsuo this July, I found myself pondering the volume pedal mod I did <a href="http://aaronlumguitar.blogspot.com/2019/12/best-volume-pedal-mods-and-hacks.html">years ago</a> where I physically stopped the minimum volume the pedal had to control the gain on my amp. I don't know what to expect with this gig, despite this being my second go around. Would I need a gain control, or a volume pedal? I also got tired of pulling out the screwdriver each time I wanted volume swells on my lap steel. So, the solution for me was clear. Create resistance to ground on a switch. I measured 1.55K on my multimeter as the resistance on my minimum volume with the previous mod. So the idea, was to put a combo of resistors to equal 1.55K that could be added between the volume pot of the pedal and ground, as well as to be taken away (switchable). After contemplating drilling a new switch hole, I realized I never used the
tuner output. I actually really have no use for it. So that was my
mounting hole. Also 100% reversible. </p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ec97rjTN6Bw/YLZeOGZxZfI/AAAAAAAAMGg/YVMKtx2nKbkNRO3Ujhdo5CO9gkOjHAWdwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG20210601122029.jpg" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ec97rjTN6Bw/YLZeOGZxZfI/AAAAAAAAMGg/YVMKtx2nKbkNRO3Ujhdo5CO9gkOjHAWdwCLcBGAsYHQ/w150-h200/IMG20210601122029.jpg" width="150" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><p style="text-align: center;"></p><p style="text-align: center;">So, (1.)I de-soldered the tuner jack, and the ground wire (grey) from the board. (2.) Soldered the pot ground (same grey wire) to the middle switch lug. The tuner jack left me some holes to run wires through! (3.) Ran a new wire from one side of the switch to the original ground board connection. (4.) Ran my resistors (1.55K) from that same lug to the opposite lug on the switch. </p><p style="text-align: center;"> After doing this, I found there are a few pedals on the market that do this same thing with a variable resistance pot, such as the new Ernie Ball MVP. I did my approach, because I didn't want the potential for the knob to get bumped or moved. I wanted a quick on-the-fly switch to change the function of my pedal. For me, this is the perfect volume pedal. (Also there's a treble bleed mod in there as well) </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3oxakTnKswU/YOUcR52zGQI/AAAAAAAAMgs/iN-Sl4N0GP89gLGZCeHcC6I0xlUnfjGFwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/volume%2Bmod.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1448" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3oxakTnKswU/YOUcR52zGQI/AAAAAAAAMgs/iN-Sl4N0GP89gLGZCeHcC6I0xlUnfjGFwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/volume%2Bmod.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HuyjYkJih-M/YLbrcixEWAI/AAAAAAAAMG4/5FQzOY0px9M9tq9jkOUBEi7A14ph-iYMwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/volume%2Bmod.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: left;">Here's a quick clip of it. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><p></p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/C9R0hFyNkdQ" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>Lumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08906332533953481681noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1930224298847481396.post-81433724361542098412021-04-11T07:56:00.015-07:002021-04-11T08:06:10.796-07:00New Split 7 Inch Out in July With Big Guest Stars<p><br /></p><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0WA9EGP1Xxk/YHMETCrWo_I/AAAAAAAALoA/FCAiH-OWnxsBlZb9tesMp7a-lkW1AfsRwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1089/BSS%2BFRONT.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1088" data-original-width="1089" height="281" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0WA9EGP1Xxk/YHMETCrWo_I/AAAAAAAALoA/FCAiH-OWnxsBlZb9tesMp7a-lkW1AfsRwCLcBGAsYHQ/w281-h281/BSS%2BFRONT.png" width="281" /></a></div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eaoq5Fyh8NM/YHMEUNRDZ_I/AAAAAAAALoE/Gp5rKQM8vRI4eJLhVukSRsyOPVSRAVC3gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1086/LED%2BZEP%2BFRONT.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1086" data-original-width="1086" height="280" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eaoq5Fyh8NM/YHMEUNRDZ_I/AAAAAAAALoE/Gp5rKQM8vRI4eJLhVukSRsyOPVSRAVC3gCLcBGAsYHQ/w280-h280/LED%2BZEP%2BFRONT.png" width="280" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div style="text-align: center;">I know....It's been a while. It's trange how things line up and how lucky I've been the last year. Even though some people have these ridiculous superstitions about the calendar year number, the end of 2020 was a productive and musically rewarding one. A band I play in and record (Born Shit Stirrers) decided to finally put some music down on recording after being inspired and cheered on by Mike Watt after being on the Watt From Pedro Show. I think a lot of us felt in a suspended state, unsure of what to do in the future. I certainly felt very uncreative around March of 2020. The kind and wise words from Watt really got me out of my funk for sure, "You're out there on the ocean all alone on a boat." "What are you gonna do?" "Tell the wind which way to blow?" In other words, make do with what you got and adapt to the situation. Watt also always ends his radio show with "keep your powder dry". Kind of an always be ready mantra of the revolutionary war. <br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Not only was he the kick in the pants we needed, but he also was kind enough to add his bass to our tracks. It's got to be one of the biggest musical moments of my life for me to play on the same tracks as a hero of mine. I'm really proud of how everything turned out and came together, even though I'm probably going to hell for the lyrics. </div><div style="text-align: center;">Watt wasn't alone either as a guest star. We were lucky enough to have Joe King(Joe Queer) from The Queers and Reverend Nørb from Boris the Sprinkler grace us with their vocal stylings. The songs will come out on a split 7 inch in July on <a href="https://serialbowlrecords.bandcamp.com/">Serial Bowl Records</a> in the UK with friends from another semi-local band in Kumamoto Japan, Led Zep Vietcong. The album names were definitely inspired by the crappy company I was working for last year and our sexual frustrations in lock-down. I know July is a ways away, so here is a track to wet your beak to until then. A cover, believe it or not about Richard Gere and a gerbil. Our new vinyl "Lester", comes out next Friday on Serial Bowl Records and Chaos Control out of the Uk. Pre-orders are available now <a href="https://serialbowlrecords.bandcamp.com/album/lester-pre-order">Here</a>. I believe these will be in Pepto Bismol pink vinyl. If you can't tell from the cover, this one is pretty sick and twisted. If you're into offensive punk rock, grab a copy or download it next week. Stay safe out there.<br />

Unknowingly, I recently was in the market for a Klon Centaur overdrive pedal. By unknowingly, I mean I stumbled upon a super cheap Chinese clone kit version on amazon (<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0K3NUI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1">https://www.amazon.com</a>) for a mere $46. I had reservations about it, especially being on amazon, but for that price I didn't have much to lose. Considering real Klons are going for prices upwards of $3000, I had to try it. Seems every famous guitarist I like has one these days after all. <br />

Granted they weren't easy to read when the package arrived. But with a multimeter, and some basic electronic knowledge, you should have no problem. Only mix-up I had was with the two ceramic caps. That was easy to mix up. I got it running on the first try, but I wouldn't recommend this for someone just starting out. However it really is paint by numbers with the values printed on the board.<br />
<br />
Overall I couldn't build this from parts for the cost they are
selling it at. The components I counted compared to the schematic floating around online and it was spot on. Other then and extra resistor which I think was a foot switch pop filter. Sounds damn good, and close to every Klon demo I've
heard. The enclosure and paint job alone are worth the price. No idea
how they're making money off this in China. It's on one of my boards
now. Go slow, double check the values, and polarity. Also the slop or notch on the audio jacks are the ground. There are other Klon clones on the market going for a lot more money. As well as some Klon inspired pedals like the EHX Soul Food, which is pretty affordable. But I have to hand it to the guys to threw this together. For the price is it hard to beat it's value and sound. Plus it was fun to solder it together for an afternoon.<br />

Folks. Sorry for the ineptitude on replying to comments the last few months. I found the site bombarded with spam over the summer and it took me a while to find a few of you. Also I finally broke down and joined the modern zombie world and purchased a "smart"phone after years of irritating loved ones, friends and work by not being available. So, that means I will actually get notifications a bit quicker on all comments.<br />

In other news, we(Godzilla Snacks) are practicing to prepare starting our third EP recording. Might technically be a full length by the end. Hopefully I'll have a better space for a home studio soon as well. Going to be a busy 2020. <br />
<br />
Born Shit Stirrers has a vinyl recording coming out soon on Serial Bowl Records of Sunderland, UK in a joint effort from Boss Tuneage, and Chaos Control Records. It's somewhat a concept album called "Lester", for reasons that will become more obvious next month. Again, this band is going to hell. <br />

That very band, Born Shit Stirrers and I dropped a fortune on a out of town gig last weekend. The very reason touring in Japan is not a great strategy; unless you want to enjoy a vacation as a tourist and drop a load of coin. One of us needs to buy a van... We made it to the southern end of Kyushu in a city named Kumamoto.(The creepy black Japanese bear cartoon city) The show went well and all, nothing to really get excited about. Other than the raw horse sashimi. Actually a full smorgasbord of horse entrees to be eaten. We paid a premium for it, but the drummer Jun was nice enough to pick up the bill. (He has a lot more disposable income now that he quit drugs.) And to think, people in Europe were getting upset a few years back, that McDonald's was mixing this delicious stuff in with the burger meat!<br />
<br />
Well, just thought I'd post something and check in. Life's been crazy and weird lately, but here's hoping it's good for all of you. Stay safe, and wash your damn hands, there's bat/snake flu going around. (Ironically probably started from eating odd raw animals.)<br />

Boring right? I used to only use them with lap steel or volume swells when I was younger. And most my volume swells could have been done with the volume control on my guitar. So I never pulled the pedal out much for a long period of time. I think a lot of people are the same way, That was until I started playing more dynamic music with a lot more volume changes and had a real need for quick control over my distortion vs clean sound. The full on/off distortion control I got from my amp switcher or pedals wasn't cutting it anymore for the music I was playing. I also started loving the clean sound of a driven amp with my volume control down. With my hands busy playing I couldn't make the changes I wanted on the guitar quick enough, so I turned to my old volume pedal to control my gain with my foot. Only problem was it was hard to get the pedal to turn down to where I needed it to be for a clean sound and not cutting my volume off completely. <a href="<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/C9R0hFyNkdQ" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>"><b>Update* I did the same thing electronically which is a much better mod. </b></a><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A new minimal heel position for my "clean channel"</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Solution: </b> A shaved down rubber door stop from a hardware store at the heel of the foot control. There just happens to be a small rubber stop with a set screw there already on the Ernie Ball volume pedal. If you replace that stopper with something a bit higher you can disable the pedal from turning the volume fully off. Just find the clean tone position you want and measure the height to shave down your door stopper at. This really makes for easier changes in a live situation. Everything from distorting to clean all at your control, and no worries of cutting off your volume completely.<br />

<b>Next up:</b> Playing clean tone with a standard wired volume pot turned down leads to another potentially unwanted problem. Just like with your guitar's volume control, you loose treble as the pot is turned down. I decided with the way I was using my volume pedal, I would have to do a treble bleed mod. There are a few versions of the mod to the right. The best resource online is from JohnH on this board site: <a href="http://guitarnuts2.proboards.com/thread/5317/treble-bleed-circuit">http://guitarnuts2.proboards.com/thread/5317/treble-bleed-circuit</a><br />
There you will find all the EQ curves at different decibels with all the possible treble bleed mods, best component values and a improved circuit with a stacked dual concentric pot. For most of my needs I find the parallel mod does a good enough job retaining the EQ curve across different volumes. If you do end up doing this mod, you will need help putting the pedal it back together with it's string and string pulley. It's not as easy as it looks. Plenty of tutorials on youtube to help you with that. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrDRKahbY28">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrDRKahbY28</a><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Volume Pedal Turned Expression Pedal</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>The Final Hack: </b>Not a mod, but a use for a standard <u>PASSIVE</u> volume pedal that isn't well know. Instead of buying an extra expression pedal many companies make for their pedals, you can use a volume pedal with a Y cable with a stereo jack plug. Just plug the mono jack plugs(Y part) into the volume pedal's input and output, and the stereo jack plug(single tail part of the Y) into the expression jack. You may have to switch the input and output jacks around if it doesn't work on the first try, You could also double up or triple up the one pedal to control many different expression controls. Just use an all female input headphone splitter adapter to run two stereo chords out to different pedals expression inputs. Or multiply the expression control with more adapters if you want.<br />
<br />
So, lots of things you can used a volume pedal for. So don't overlook them. Surprisingly it's has become the most essential part of my rig for controlling how much gain I'm getting from my amp. Probably the most essential part of how my guitar playing works in my three piece band. These tips and mods aren't all you can do either. Control the amount of a direct effect in a wet/dry amp setup. Perhaps make synth like pad sounds with a delay like David Gilmour's sound on sound setup. <a href="http://www.gilmourish.com/?p=287">http://www.gilmourish.com/?p=287</a><br />
<br />
Experiment. Have fun. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Thought I'd demonstrate a few ways to make items not intended to be microphones, just that.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first example in the video above, uses a guitar pickup as a mic. Usually pickups have to be at least slightly microphonic to pick up the human voice or other non-magnetic objects. Not to be confused with harmonic feedback which resonate as a guitar is intended. Microphonic pickups are caused by the actual coil wires vibrating or resonating. Often causing unpleasant squeals. These are usually un-potted pickups. Un-potted pickups will pickup other sound sources better than potted ones. Sometimes you can coax a potted pickup to act as a mic with enough gain on the amp as well. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qa2cE2TsMQo/Xd1alDZWcVI/AAAAAAAAG9Y/j0c63zER5Ncw2VYgxX8SeLJHJBjbFTL8QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/speakers.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="763" data-original-width="1600" height="152" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qa2cE2TsMQo/Xd1alDZWcVI/AAAAAAAAG9Y/j0c63zER5Ncw2VYgxX8SeLJHJBjbFTL8QCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/speakers.png" width="320" /></a> The second example uses an everyday common loudspeaker. The mechanics of a loudspeaker and a common dynamic mic we all use are the same. A voice coil, a magnet, and a diaphragm, to either absorb or project sound waves. Both loudspeakers and dynamic mics can be used in reverse. Speakers can be used as mics and mics can be used as speakers. However, I don't recommend using your favorite mic as a speaker. The frequencies won't be reproduced well and you could potentially damage that mic. Piezo elements as well, used on a lot of musical instruments can also act as a pickup or a speaker of sorts</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KGdw8DpkdSE/Xd1bgkrYcBI/AAAAAAAAG9g/-2f-15v38jsN9O8zcQ18W3cnV_7E-nU4ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/18949646_491014071290583_1369244138129588224_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KGdw8DpkdSE/Xd1bgkrYcBI/AAAAAAAAG9g/-2f-15v38jsN9O8zcQ18W3cnV_7E-nU4ACLcBGAsYHQ/s200/18949646_491014071290583_1369244138129588224_n.jpg" width="200" /></a>A common use of a speaker as a mic, is for a kick drum sub-kick. To supplement another kick drum mic with sub frequencies. These can be easily made from a variety of speakers. Just connect the positive to the hot of any connecting jack and the negative to any ground wire connecting jack. Some people make nice enclosures and mounting systems, however I found I didn't really need to, as you can see in the photo to the right. The magnet of the speak sticks to most mic stands and with a few bungee cords you can hold any speaker in place. You will find some speakers pick up low frequencies better than others. Size matters a bit, as well as cone material and flexibility. You can experiment with other parts of the kit as well. Word has it the snare drum on Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf used a small simple speaker as a mic on the side of the snare drum. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The final clip of the video simply uses the speaker as a kick drum its self through a guitar amp. A cheap kick drum, if you don't have one! You could put a speaker in an enclosure and have yourself a stompbox to accompany you. </div>

Hey sorry for the absence. Been a busy year full of ups and downs. Mostly ok. Was nice of the folks at the east bay to review our white trash in Asia CD. Back when there was a press this would have been huge for us. Still love these guys, but really worried for the future of printed word. However don't underestimate the value of these sites. Still better than the front pages most people check and SM outlets. This band has a vinyl out in December which I engineered. Starting another recording maybe in December. Hopefully I'll get a weird recording blog up by then. Oh and we made this painting and fable writing recently at the dojo. <a href="http://autopilotdojo.com/fables/Map_of_Mundus.jpg">http://autopilotdojo.com/fables/Map_of_Mundus.jpg</a><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy new year and rotation around the nuclear fusion reactor everyone. Let's talk treble boosters. For years I didn't understand them and just passed them off as an oddity of the past. Most of us guitarist don't need more treble. In fact some guys I've heard are ear piercing. I used to think you'd get the same thing from and EQ pedal. I couldn't have been more wrong. What I found was using a treble booster helped cut through a band mix and they're great for solos. It does this by cutting some of the bass frequencies that get covered up by the bass guitar or kick and boosts some of the really sweet spot frequencies so the guitar can stand out. It also adds a bit of hair on an already distorted amp. The tone is very unique and badass. So let's look at how and why I built an odd take on this cool effect from the past.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-31SrJNWq5OU/XDNzb0LvM6I/AAAAAAAAFPU/kxXsbZU0MCkywrFjGwB7PjTDuGZsL9MdACLcBGAs/s1600/45886219_1050653305119127_4797584245958779202_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-31SrJNWq5OU/XDNzb0LvM6I/AAAAAAAAFPU/kxXsbZU0MCkywrFjGwB7PjTDuGZsL9MdACLcBGAs/s320/45886219_1050653305119127_4797584245958779202_n.jpg" width="320" /></a> A while back I realized I had a bunch of germanium AC128 transistors laying around, and a super small enclosure I hadn't figured out what to do with. Around this time, a friend of mine sent me to <a href="http://www.tonefiend.com//wp-content/uploads/DIY%20Club%20Project%204%20v03.pdf">tonefiend 's project</a> of a flipped Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster. I was intrigued to try this circuit, after reading about positive ground circuits of the old days like the Fuzz Face and Dallas Rangemaster, which could be reversed to negative ground by flipping the circuit upside down. Thus allowing us to run the pedal on a standard power supply, and daisy chain it to other pedals. I was also intrigued by some of the illusive tones of the 70's like Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, Brian May of Queen, and Marc Bolan of T Rex. The circuit seemed small enough I could fit everything in the enclosure. With a lot of measuring, I barely made it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However, I ran into problems after breadboarding it up. It didn't work. I gave up, until last fall. Tried to test the circuit again; this time flipping the transistor around. Worked! I've ask folks with more electrical knowledge about why my circuit worked with a backwards transistor (emitter going to ground) and didn't really get an explanation. Seems every schematic I've seen for flipped positive ground circuits has the transistor in the wrong pinout?! Everyone else can't be wrong can they? If I get an explanation, I'll update this. But I've got a pedal and schematic that works. And it sounds pretty damn amazing. That same friend of mine and I were testing it out last week, and it just seemed like the magical pedal that made everything sound better. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I went with most of the same values as the tonefiend used and added a few different options. I added an input cap selector switch like that of Analog Man's Beano Boost. You'll need a ON-OFF-ON DPDT switch wired as in EX.2 In the "OFF" position, the middle cap gives us a standard vintage treble boost with .005uF. The switch in the above "ON" position adds .005uF to .005uF to give us .01uF. This acts as a bit of a mid boost. In the bottom "ON" position with .005uF added to .01uF, gives us .015uF. This is more of a full range boost, with more bass. I also added a .001uF cap to ground at the very end of the circuit. This helped cut down on some of the high end noise. You'll have to experiment with different transistors to find one that isn't too noisy. Germaniums can be finicky. The bible of these DIY clones was written by <a href="http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/Rangemaster/atboost.pdf">geofx</a> , with every detail addressed, right down to the voltage bias. I couldn't get the same readings as his, probably because of the flipped circuit. However, this pedal sounds great with my values without a tweaked bias. </div>

"Dallas", Rangemaster. The only other advise I have, is keep this pedal in the front of your signal chain. Much like a Fuzz Face, it needs the right impedance, or it sounds nasty. Also, you'll find these pedals don't sound inspiring through a super clean amp. You'll need to run it through something slightly to really broken up. Have fun. I'll try to get some audio or video clips soon. </div>

Here's some creepy perverted stuff for your Halloween. I finished up a pedal for a friend that I've made a few of at this point. My take on Tim Escobedo's Push Me Pull You, Octave Fuzz. I wrote about that a while back here: <a href="https://aaronlumguitar.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-diy-pedals.html">https://aaronlumguitar.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-diy-pedals.html</a> . It's my favorite octave fuzz so far. You can here it in action at the bottom track of this post. My friend and I came up with the idea to call it the Paipan Fuzz. Here in Japan that means basically what the graphics are on it, with no shrubbery. And those graphics are from a tattoo my dad, Dave Lum did years ago. He's a now retired well know tattoo artist with mind altering and twisted images. You can take a walk down memory lane with him occasionally and see his old work here:<a href="https://www.instagram.com/lumsplace/">https://www.instagram.com/lumsplace/</a> . The second pedal I did with Lum art was a ring modulator, again a modified Tim Escobedo circuit. I always wanted a ring mod, but never got around to buying one. Especially with the DOD Gonkulator prices skyrocketing. So this was a must try. It's not the most versatile ring mod in the world, but it will give you a bunch of crazy sounds. I added a few extra controls to make it more usable for me. First I replaced the original 10K resistor with a 100K potentiometer. Between the two pots you can get more sounds. I did get some harsh distortion even when my amp was clean on some settings, so I added a switch with a .0047uf cap ground which cut off some of the harsh high end frequencies. Lastly I still wanted more control, so I added a wet/dry blend pot. The simple wiring seemed to work just fine. With this, you can almost get away with playing something pretty. Here's a quick demo video I did of the pedal. Enjoy folks. <br />

Had a chance this summer to wrap up some more recording and managed to have enough songs for a little release. Some of these songs stretch back a decade or more, recorded from Salem and Portland Oregon, all the way across the Pacific here in Fukuoka Japan. Some of it is a little lo-if and quirky, but the songs meant something to me as a time capsule of my life in my late 20's and early 30s. Plus a Daniel Johnston cover. Hope you enjoy it . </div>

We finally finished up the 4th studio Born Shit Stirrers album, with an EP in its wings coming soon. I had a few more jobs to do on this one this time around. You can download it digitally from bandcamp below, or in the near future, order a hard copy via Serial Bowl Records out of Sunderland, UK. <a href="https://serialbowlrecords.bandcamp.com/">Here</a> or <a href="https://www.discogs.com/label/1262164-Serial-Bowl-Records">here</a>. Thanks for all the support!<br />

Had a chance to finish up a few unfinished songs I had. Some of these are pretty old. Well, they're new now. Got a new pedal project and some shows coming up, in between everyday chaos. Hope summer is finding you well. </div>

Had a blast two weeks ago with Don Mastuo and the GigiBand. Complete trial by fire. One practice and away we went. Mostly improvised, just following Don's cues. It's been a busy spring. Here's a set list and a few videos. Big thanks to my band mates for the night. </div>

Next week I get the honor to play guitar in the backing band of Don Matsuo from the Zoobombs. It also coincides with Gigi's 12th anniversary. It's been a great place to play at over the years, and it's a local music institution at this point. Well, here in Fukuoka Japan anyhow. If you haven't heard of the Zoobombs, check them out next time they come to the U.S. or Canada. They are nuts.</div>
